Shabbat Shalom, Hey!

Review

"A peppy, lively Shabbat song full of spirit and cheer, Shabbat Shalom, Hey! is known to many children who love to clap to its rhythms and shout out the 'Hey' emphatically and joy-fully. In this bright, colorful picture book, Ann Koffsky has illustrated the song with humor and sparkle, bringing it to life anew. Her quirky, charming animal illustrations with their expressive facial expressions leap off the pages in consonance with the song's rhythmic syl-lables. Children will have fun turning the pages and singing along as the animals prepare a Shabbat table with recognizable symbols; the candles, challah, and kiddush cup are all there by the final resounding 'Hey.' " -- Jewish Book World--Magazine"Toddlers who attend Jewish preschools (and their parents) are no doubt familiar with this classic children's song, used to salute the Jewish Sabbath. Here the song is transformed into a narrative of sorts in which several animals perform the song while gathering Shabbat essentials. Toucan brings the candles; Snake brings the wine cup; Monkey brings the challah; and Lion prepares the table. Koffsky's vibrant cartoonstyle artwork is well suited to the celebratory atmosphere of this weekly observance. The colorful animals stand out against vivid background hues, and the decision to place the artwork at a 90-degree rotation from standard page turns allows for impressive vertical spreads that can be easily viewed in a group setting. Paired with Sylvia Rouss' Sammy Spider's First Shabbat (1997), this makes a good participatory piece: children shout the 'Hey!' refrain, and a QR code on the back cover links to a recording of the song. This will be welcomed by religious schools and public libraries where demand is high." -- Booklist--Journal

If I could give this book less than 1 star I would. It was a total waste of 7 dollars. There are a total of 3 words in the whole book. Shabbat, Shalom & Hey. Its ridiculous. There is no story, just a lion shouting Shabbat, then Shalom and the other animals shouting Hey. The art work is marginal at best, nothing impressive at all about this book. I thought maybe it would be a nice book for my daughter to read on the Sabbath, it had 5 stars, and there are not many choices for shabbat children books. Make sure you are more careful than I was when reading the reviews, initially didn't pay attention the reviews were from people who received the book for free, for a "honest review." Well my opinion is the book sucks and had to pay to find out. Didn't return it because the first day my daughter bent it up, wasn't worth the trouble.

Lion smiles as he sings out his greeting, "Shabbat Shalom." All of a sudden Toucan replies from way up high, "Hey!" Lion is startled and doesn't know where that voice is coming from. The Lion spots Toucan up in the corner and greets him again, "Shabbat Shalom." There are voices everywhere, but just who is shouting at him again? Look over there ... it's none other than Monkey and Snake! They were there a minute ago, but where have they gone? Lion lifts up the carpet. Nope, they are missing. He begins to roam around shouting out his greeting of peace, "Shabbat Shalom." He goes this way and that, that way and this, but where can they be? All of a sudden, Toucan, Monkey, and Snake shout "Hey!" at Lion, who is very, very startled. There they are and it's time to set the Shabbat table. This is a fun tale of Lion's Shabbat that young children can sing along with. Lion enjoys singing out his greeting of peace for Shabbat, but everyone is hiding. Once they are found they quickly begin to set the Shabbat table with two loaves of challah, candles, and wine. Children can learn about Shabbat, the special greeting, and what goes on the table through this simple, almost wordless book. There's a link provided on the back cover so children can "read" and sing along with Lion and his friends. This book courtesy of the publisher.שַׁבָּת שָׁלוֹם

In "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!", children will learn three words..."Shabbat", "Shalom", and "Hey!". There are illustrations in the book of animals saying and then expressing those words. It is based on a well-known children's song. I believe this story will help children concentrate on the Sabbath, while hopefully the person reading it (and/or singing) it to them (parent, teacher, etc.) will be able to explain to them what the Sabbath is if they don't already know. One of the illustrations in the book gives a clear meaning about what the Sabbath is, while all the other illustrations lead up to it.I think this book will be great for children to look at while they are singing the "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!" song. It will probably make some children giggle as they are singing the song to see the animals in the pictures saying the very same words. Something I noticed that is different with this book versus other children's books is that the pages are turned the opposite way than they usually are, to make a longer picture. This story is great way to help children learn the "Shabbat Shalom, Hey!" and also make the meaning of the song come alive for them!I received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I think with kids books (especially young kids) illustrations are important to capturing their attention and this doesn't disappoint. Cute animals singing Shabbat Shalom.
