If you are interested in a well-researched and thorough academic view of Scientology and Scientologists, you have found it. Westbrook has managed to present one of, if not the, most objective treatments of Scientology to date. This is not a puff piece or glowing report; nor is it a sensational or lurid account.Through Westbrook’s research and writing, the reader begins to understand Scientologists on their own terms. This understanding is contextualized by Westbrook’s matter-of- fact, yet fascinating, and un-whitewashed history of Scientology. The author does not avoid “controversial†issues such as disconnection, the church’s past and present legal entities (GO/OSA), donations, church leadership, or the Sea Org, but informs on these, as well as topics including the evolution from Dianetics to Scientology, “The Bridge to Total Freedomâ€, Scientology’s anti-psychiatric theology, and what it is like to live as a parishioner and everyday Scientologist. In addition to the narratives woven through the book, the supporting 116 pages of notes and bibliography serve to provide a more nuanced and balanced view of these people and their church.
I actually took the time to read Westbrook’s Among the Scientologists without any half-baked, preconceived notions. It’s a scholarly page turner (a rare amalgamation) based on years of research and interviews with members of the church. Individual life experiences and narratives are finally revealed that range from routine to fascinating. The result is a ground-breaking, historical examination of Scientology from the inside. Contrary to the opinions expressed by negative reviewers, the church is evaluated from an independent point of view. In terms of academic credibility, this volume being published by the prestigious Oxford University Press speaks for itself.
This book reminded me of one of those journal articles out of a journal where people pay to get printed. Usually they have a conclusion that they start at, and work backward, trying to prove their conclusion, instead of analyzing the data and coming to a conclusion based on the facts. It seems to me that this book reads like it’s shilling for Scientology, recommending Scientology sites to read that are created by them. All of the people interviewed were recommended by Scientology, and no one that has left the church was interviewed, or even considered. The author then has the audacity to suggest that his research is akin to a scientific analysis although admitting to a totally nonrandom sample. Indeed, he let Scientology choose the people he interviewed! This book is an affront to anyone who has been in Scientology and left, and in fact, anybody that’s ever read a book about or watched a TV show about Scientology. Totally missing from this “intellectual†account is information about disconnecting from family members if they disagree with their choice of “religion.†Also missing is that the fact that Scientology is shrinking at a fast rate, losing about half their members per decade for the last two decades. Missing is the fact that the focus of the church is no longer “clearing the planet†but is in fact preoccupied with fund-raising from their wealthier members, building large “Ideal Orgs†that become empty shortly after opening. I always marvel why people like cult apologist Gordon Melton don’t question the fact that Scientologists are supposed to acquire abilities such as telekinesis, telepathy, and more, but NOT ONCE has anyone ever witnessed these powers?The expense of Scientology—what other church charges for salvation and has a menu of costs of services? —is an issue not explained—likewise is the fact that the Kindle price for this worthless “research†is $30.99! Save your money and read anything else about Scientology for a more realistic picture.
