About the Author

With a storied career that has spanned more than six decades, Dan Rather is one of the world’s best-known journalists. He has interviewed every president since Eisenhower and covered almost every important dateline around the world. Rather joined CBS News in 1962, and in 1981 he assumed the position of Anchor and Managing Editor of the CBS Evening News, which he held for twenty-four years. His reporting helped turn 60 Minutes into an institution, launched 48 Hours as a newsmagazine program, and shaped countless specials and documentaries. Upon leaving CBS, Rather created the Emmy Award–winning Dan Rather Reports on HDNet. He is founder, president, and CEO of News and Guts, an independent production company that specializes in high-quality nonfiction content across a range of traditional and digital channels.Elliot Kirschner is an Emmy Award–winning journalist and filmmaker. After a career at CBS, producing for the CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning, and 60 Minutes II, Kirschner joined his longtime collaborator Dan Rather as the senior producer for Dan Rather Reports. He now develops film, television, and digital projects. This is a book that is so carefully worded that you could give it to your red (or blue) relative for Christmas. Rather calls all Americans to our higher values, and uses his own history growing up in Texas to connect with readers, both red and blue. I grew up red, am now blue, my dad is still red and I will give him this book for Christmas, because it will not offend him, but will call him to look at some of the current issues in light of how we have always thought of ourselves as Americans.

In the often-hardscrabble world of the newsroom, Dan Rather has always stood out as a bit, well, sentimental. And he readily admits it: “Like so many, I love my country and its people. I do so with a sentimentality that may seem anachronistic in today’s more jaded world.”The thing that has always made Rather such an American force, however, is that he comes by the sentimentality honestly. Whatever you conclude about the man after reading this book you will and must conclude that he is authentic. He is the real deal.There are so many great sentiments in this book. It’s impossible to pick out the best. Here’s just a sampling:“If we lose a sense of humility, we risk losing everything.”“Patriotism is rooted in humility. Nationalism is rooted in arrogance.”“…a free press is even more relevant now than ever.”“…the whole premise of our democracy is that truth and justice must win out.”“…art is about engaging in a candid dialogue with yourself.”“American greatness has largely been driven by audacity.”And my favorite, “Still, libraries represent an aspirational notion of democracy.” Indeed they do.Born into the Great Depression, the son of a Texas oilfield worker, Rather’s life certainly mirrors the great opportunity that we, as Americans, have been blessed with. Importantly, however, the acquisition that he is clearly proudest of and most thankful for is the acquisition of knowledge, an acquired love of art and theater, a deepfelt respect for science, and the rich memories of all the people he has met over a lifetime of curiosity.Dan is a bit older than I am, but I am old enough to appreciate the sentiment that “The opportunity for me and my generation to confront those questions is rapidly receding.” Not so rapidly, however, that a man like Dan Rather doesn’t make the effort, however, to have another crack at them. Here’s to hoping there are many more such opportunities for us to enjoy his insightful and inspiring authenticity.I normally reserve five star ratings for books that are truly transformative. I’m not sure this book rises to that standard but the man’s life and contribution certainly do.

Dan Rather's observations of our nation, added to his years with words, bring a clear light to the surface of awareness. He puts parts of history into a perspective that needed. Besides that, he will always be a local boy made good for many Texans like myself. My grandmother lived in the Heights at the same time Rather grew up there. I was reared only a few miles from where his wife was from. And I too graduated from Sam Houston.

Dan Rather has been an American reporter for the ages. He's as comfortable as a well-worn shoe and continues to tell it like it is. His book weaves ideas he has formulated in his long life from his childhood to present day. Still a force to be reckoned with, Dan's book gives the reader hope in a time that may be considered cloudy.

I would recommend this book to anyone. Rather had a great way with words and his stories are engaging. It doesn't matter your political party, you can find value here. In today's world it often seems like there's such a divide in how Americans think and view the world... this side or that side. This book shows what Americans can unite behind, we're more similar than different. I loved reading this book.

Too much pontificating by the author, who got his start in the Texas news world about the time I bailed out. I expected more journalism and less opinions, whether or not I agree with the opinion.

I loved this book! It was nostalgic and cathartic. Of years since past and the feelings society seemed to have for its members back then. Let's see if we can repeat some of that compassion; that sense that the other guy needs help.

This book is a collection of stories and lessons that we can all relate to. It shows that there is always hope, if only we remember to slow down,look around, and stand up for what's right.
