I was a little disappointed in this book. I'm currently doing freelance photography and I was looking for some literature that explained more freelance practices in depth. Specifically about pricing sturcture and contracts, but it is very, very vague. For example on the contracts and legalities of setting up a shoot, the book basically says to just find a good attorney. Well, I'm really a full-time employed graphic designer/photographer as my "day" job, who just happens to freelance two or three times a month for my private photographer business. I don't have the funds to hire for an attorney. I needed a basic list of how to structure my own contracts since I know some of the gray areas to clients from hell. (You know the kind who wants $1,000 worth services/products for $150.)As far as pricing structure the book basically says don't under charge yourself. They don't really give any examples of hourly rates for certain types of photography. And I know there is really no set point, but I was hoping to have a few examples of what to charge versus time spent editing for those price ranges. I was hoping they would highlight on setting up different package rate programs, so as to not scare off potential clients who have no knowledge of the photography business. All in all: some good points, but pretty basic information. Great for someone who hasn't created a business name and already started freelancing, but not enough insight foe someone looking to take their business to the next level.
Excellent book. Cover every basic and so much more. Gives you advice on every angle of your Photography business. At the end you can find many links to different sites, it depends on what you looking for. I would recommend it to everyone who is serious about making it in a Photography industry.
I cant believe people actually gave this garbage 5 stars. makes me wonder if its friends and family of the author. This is an insult to the reader. unless you don't know that you have to get business cards and a phone for your business. The author tells how to "build your dream team" in 12 lines !here are a few segments from this retarded book; (by the way they are not edited or cut. these are the actual segments:*Modem- This goes along with the computer because modems provide essential access to the internet. invest in the fastest cable modem or DSL that your budget will allow to accommodate the size and volume of images you will be transmitting.*Shelving- Most business owners will tell you that having shelves installed on the walls of your office or studio is essential to keeping inventory and supplies organized and within easy reach. you can also purchase storage shelves on wheels or shelving unit that comes as one large piece of furniture. If that is valuable information for someone who is ready to "Start your own photography business" than you are in real trouble.I cant remember ever discussing with "most business owners" on shelving for my business.I cant imagine someone about to start a business (especially photography) and not knowing they need a modem or internet access.I actually read the whole book. it was the curiosity of looking at an accident.I have never felt so insulted and frustrated when reading a book.Save your money. don't touch this joke!
Waste of time and money. I you are already seriously considering photography as a career you probably already know all the stuff in this book. It pretty much just concentrates on the differnent fields of photography such as commercial, child, family, stock...etc. I am betting that if you want a career in photography you already know what you like to take pictures of! RIGHT???
This item contains good information, however there is a newer revised version of the book. Wish I would have bought that one instead. The revised edition has about 100 more pages than this book.
Is a great book for starting your own photography business. Business is a part of it so if you are not a business person, then I would say this is for you. To me, being in the business world for a number of years, I pretty much know it but for someone that is new, its a good book. Its also a good refresher, I should say, for the photographer or business person so they don't forget what business parts they need to do.
Nice and informative.
Book came in very good condition.
