Lindsey Vonn didn’t start out skiing on mountain trails, but rather a hill, Buck Hill in Burnsville, Minnesota. It didn’t have much of a slope, but when “she took up skiing at the age of three” it was “clear that she was talented.” In fact, it didn’t take her long to start wiping out the competition was she was all of seven years old. “I would finish a race,” Lindsey later explained, “and all the 14-year-olds at the bottom would be crying because a 10-year-old had beaten them.” Skiing was just a fun thing to do, but after she met Picabo Street it became a passion.Skiing was one of those all-in-the-family type sports for Lindsey because both her father and grandfather had been competitive skiers. After a move to Vail, Colorado, where those hills were exchanged for mountains, Lindsey began to win and win big. By the time she was a seventeen-year-old, “she qualified for the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah.” The fun and the winning had only just begun for young Lindsey Vonn. There was only one problem and that was the fact that “she wasn’t the best.” It mattered that she wasn’t, but what was the problem?The problem was the fact that her US Ski Team teammate, Julia Mancuso, left her in the dust. They were good friends, but “also rivals.” When they “took a bike ride together that changed everything.” A bike ride?
