Burned yet again by the lure of a free book with a high rating. I should know better by now - there's a reason the book is free. Yes, I know - introduce an audience to a new book, get them hooked, and then they'll purchase the rest of the series. But I, for one, will be moving on to something else, never to return to the story of Quentin Barnes, quarterback extraordinaire.The concept of mixing science-fiction with high-stakes, futuristic football is intriguing. It is what drew me to the book (that, and all the over-zealous ratings). But, unfortunately, Sigler doesn't really pull it off. I can see I am in the significant minority here, but I will have to chart my own path on this one."Subtle" does not appear to be a familiar concept to Sigler. Most good sci-fi has a message, and usually that message is best delivered through nuanced storytelling. Not here. Sigler's anti-religious views are hammered home with all the subtlety of a brick to the face. The racist, neo-nazi religious leaders and organizations in The Rookie's universe are such an over-the-top caricature of today's organized religion, that I had to invoke my ERPP metric - Eye Rolls Per Page. And needless to say, it was quite high.Speaking of religion, perhaps Sigler should stick to story-telling and not theology. For instance, one of the descriptions of our the three major religions is outlined as such: "Historians can only estimate the number of deaths caused by altercations amongst [Christianity, Judaism, and Islam], and yet the most ironic part is that all three, essentially, worship the very same god." Bzzzt. Thanks for playing, Scott, but you should stick to football. Perhaps some religious education is in order. We won't even chide him too much for emphasizing the number of deaths caused by religion but ignoring the exponentially higher number of deaths caused by atheistic and non-religious governments and entities. A convenient, but unfortunately common, mistake.Should I go on? In for a penny, in for a pound, as they say. We know that the current generation of sci-fi writers all learned in authoring school that somewhere in the book we must reference same-sex unions in a positive light, even if not germane to the story, or else we won't be taken seriously by today's enlightened reader. Sigler is no exception. But immediately after passing two women in an obvious relationship, our hero turns around and ogles each women's "shapely booty". Nothing like reducing our ladies to just a crude and demeaning body-part reference. Or even worse, an attempt at humor such as this: "Otherwise the Krakens have about as much chance as a naked nun at a Purist Nation rapist convention.” Rape isn't really that funny, even in fiction. The hypocrisy is painful.But my problems with the book wasn't just Sigler's holier-than-thou take on religion, or his liberal leanings, but the story just isn't that good. There were too many unbelievable parts, the least being Barnes' complete and total lack of anything that could be described as intelligence, or good judgment. I just couldn't believe someone could be that stupid, and miss so many obvious pointers to the truth of a given situation. It certainly didn't help the ERPP metric.Or the fact that all of these alien races that just a few years earlier had been committing mass genocide, nuking each other's planets to oblivion, and hating each other's very existence are now suddenly best buddy teammates, linking hands (tentacles, appendages, etc) and running out onto the field together singing kumbaya, stretched the suspension of disbelief.It's also ironic that the Purist Nation gets the rap for being racist, but all of these races now get a pass despite all of their previous genocidal behavior because ... they play football together?At the end of the day I think you can do much better than this. The book may be free, but your time is not. Spend it reading something a little more worthwhile.---------------I noticed Amazon and Goodreads have a slightly different meanings to their 5-point scale. I thought it was odd to have a different rating for the same book on two different sites, so I came up with my own scale below. For the record, it is fairly close to Amazon's scale, but allows me to be consistent between the two sites.5 - Fantastic. Life-altering. Maybe only 25 in a lifetime.4 - Very good.3 - Worth your time.2 - Not very good.1 - Atrocious

This story is about a rookie in the galactic football league 700 years in the future. Football has become the sport to unite multiple alien races throughout the galaxy and the planets on which they live. Football has changed. It is more violent and physical. Some players are even killed during a game. Mankind has evolved and many humans that play are 7 feet tall and weigh 350 pounds and have speed and athletic skills that we can hardly imagine. Top that off with aliens giants that are fast and agile and can catch passes 20 feet in the air and you are beginning to understand the game. Some players weigh over 600 pounds and can bench press over 1300 pounds. The goal is to win and to survive!Football was made a galactic sport to help the aliens and humans to learn to play as a team and learn to appreciate each other as teammates and friends. They are to be the examples for all the people in the known universe. The alternative is hatred of all alien things and war…..Scott Sigler has written a unique Sci-Fi story that it entertaining and uses a sport as a means to bring alien species together. You can see and understand the conflicts and the beliefs of the different races and how they learn to succeed as a team and through synergy achieve more as a coordinated team that they ever could as individuals.The storyline of this book is well conceived and entertaining to read. If you love Sci-Fi and football then this is a WIN-Win story for you. I liked the book a lot and I rated it at 5 stars! There are a few misspelled words and the use of the wrong word at times but it was minimal and I overlooked them in light of the great storyline.

It probably sounds campy, combining space opera with football but Scott Sigler pulls it off brilliantly not only in the first novel "The Rookie" but equally well in the subsequent ones as well .Sigler does a brilliant job of describing a future football league that includes regular humans (who generally play quarterback, running back, tight end, and some line backers, humans from heavy gravity worlds or heavy-G (who generally become defensive ends and sometimes offensive linemen), Sklorno the superfast though fragile aliens who make up almost all wide recievers and defensive backs, the Ki the literally nightmarish aliens who make up the offensive linemen and interior defensive line, and the Qyuh, warrior sect who are mostly outside linebackers and defensive ends.The characters are remarkably well drawn with the central figure, human QB Quentin Barnes being a likeable though occasionally annoying young man who hails from a nightmarish human interstellar power called "Purist Nation" that is obviously the worst possible combination of Christian fundamentalist and Islamic extremism. Along with his staggering racism many of his attitudes seem just like a 21st century athlete going from high school and then to the college level.All in all the Galactic Football League is one of truely great science fiction series being written today.
